Got an old kitchen appliance that you need to remove or replace? Whether it has come to the end of its life, or you are passing it on for someone to get good use from it, you should consider your options.
Landfill should be the last resort as appliances are made from and contain materials that damage the environment and the ozone layer. Fridges contain HCFC’s (hydrochlorofluorocarbons) and metals like lead that can contaminate soil and our water supply. If we calculate these factors with the amount of unrecycled and fly tipped appliances, the statistics are truly shocking and more to the point extremely bad for our environment. If you are thinking surely one refrigerator won’t play a huge part in looking after the environment, you need to think again.
Donate
Donating to a charity is a great way of recycling and enables people to benefit from access to otherwise unaffordable luxuries.
Charities are constantly looking for donated items in this category. You can try; Oxfam, Macmillan Cancer Support, The Salvation Army and your local homeless shelters. If you are lucky they may collect your items for you.
Giving or Selling
eBay and Gumtree are full of people looking for a bargain, but to get the best deal give it a good clean and take videos or photos of it working. Some buyers will organise the pickup and delivery, but if it’s a local buyer a local clearance company may be able to help you uninstall and deliver it.
End of life- Clearance
A local waste removal company will provide you with the correct advice when it comes to removing old appliances. The majority of companies offer categorised services based on what type of appliances you are disposing of. For example, fridges contain gas which need to be expelled within a controlled environment and cannot be disposed of with standard/regular waste.
